This
lecture aims to critically discuss football fan activism and its potential to foster
social change. I will first introduce the notion of the “football fan activism
complex” to summarize the main agenda pursued by the active minority of
football fans. Furthermore, I will discuss the social processes that underpin
the successes and failures of football fan transformative initiatives. I will
conclude by showing that the heuristic model developed in relation to football
can be applied to explore the impact of civic engagement in other social
spheres. The lecture is drawn on an ethnographic study conducted in Czechia, Italy and
the UK.
